Most of this footage was recorded by John Irvine, with some additional filming by his brother Derek between 1959 and 1961. In John’s role as teacher at Forrester High School (Edinburgh) he took parties of school kids to Shetland every summer on outdoor education trips. This footage follows the pupils as they attend the 1960 Sandwick Regatta.

As I'm from Sandwick myself, it's interesting to see footage of the community regatta over the decades. It was always a big part of the village social calendar and a good time to bring people together.

Memories of the sports on Regatta days all around the County are brought to life in this short film. Swimming, water sports, races, tug o' war and the like with many recognisable faces and views of Sandsayre and Sand Lodge grounds.

Aside from the sailing events, it's interesting to see the children taking part in a traditional barrel race and land sports in the grounds of Sandlodge. A great day out for everyone!
